The Guardian Cover

During COVID-19 Lockdown, I entered a competition set by The Guardian to design their Weekend magazine front cover. My design 'Make it Safe' was excitingly selected as one of the front covers to be published.

The brief was to reflect the times we were living in as almost graduated fashion students.

I had a few inspirations and ideas for the cover design. Firstly it was digitally created and is super minimalist, which isn’t my usual style of illustration but with everything going on I didn’t have any of my usual art materials with me at home to do it, and couldn’t get ordered in time either. I also didn’t have anywhere to do it- literally! I moved back home during COVID-19 from uni with my parents and 3 of my siblings. We are ALL either students or working from home, so room is scarce. So I had to keep it quick in order to get it done!

My artwork usually consists of layer upon layer of different art materials etc, but this is a simple one line drawing.

I love this approach because I had to re-think my usual artistic style. I also think think it reflects the times we are in, having to strip everything away to get back to basics.

I was also inspired by the news. The idea came after just watiching the news updates for the 1000th time, where the lack of PPE and protective clothing was the main headline. Another story at that time were the many fashion houses such as Kering, Chanel, Mulberry and Lucy and Yak etc that had all began making PPE for hospital staff and other key workers. It occurred to me, with the changing states of all industries including the fashion industry, that priorities had shifted. It was no longer about making fashion items that looked good, or caught people attention, it was now purely about what’s practical and safe during COVID-19.

This change in society Inspired my use of the face mask, with the saying ‘make it fashion’, crossed out to say ‘safe.’ I wanted to emphasise that safety is all that matters right now.

I knew I would take an illustrated route with the design. I love to illustrate real life situations and people, using creative expressions to comment on society.

Vitamin

I loved this partuclar venture of mine because I was able to take a simple piece of knowledge that I found somewhat fascinating, turn that into an idea and watch that grow into a tangible and real business. That journey not only helped me understand the process of what is is to create something in its entirety, from the creative idea-generation stage, all the way through to the more logistical and practical side of marketing, production, customer relations and so on. But is also helped me learn the power of good thought- out design and content creation/management, and how to implement that consistently and strategically in order to come up with something great. I loved the challenge of wanting to convey the mission statement, but needing to communicate it in as engaging and unorthodox way as possible.

Sea

From- 2016 2020  I created and ran a fashion line inspired by the idea that the sea can help us with our mental health and wellbeing. It can physically improve our mood and stress levels in a multitude of ways. It truly is a vitamin for our mind, soul and bodies.

Grey Area

For my final major project in university, I created a brand called Grey Area that celebrates and promotes fashion brands and other creative individuals that use their craft to bring about better mental health awareness and therefore change in 2020.

I created a 80 page magazine that entirely focused around sharing stories about a chosen collection of contributors who all help end the stigma surrounding mental health today.

I also created supporting merchandise, such as badges, bags, sketchbook, a digital marketing strategy and social media campaign  and a series of promotional videos and campaign posters.

Creative Direction and/or

Photography

I enjoy the role of creative direction within both a film and fashion shoot context. I love to play around with compositions and set ups, experimenting in order to create a different feel with every story.

In addition, I have photographed a few fashion shoots myself, for a number of projects, seem for other people. Here you'll find a small selection of some of my favourite images from projects I have been involved with, either as the creative director or the photographer, or both.
